Traditional Chinese societies took study and literacy very seriously. As academic success would bring glory and fame to the family, different kinds of etiquette and customs arose to ensure an auspicious start on the first day of school. Nowadays these traditional customs have become a thing of the past. Nonetheless for a young child, the first day of school is still a sometimes nervous and sometimes exciting step away from the familiar world of family and home into the larger community of a kindergarten or equivalent. It is therefore of the utmost importance that parents and teachers improve their understanding of a child’s needs during this transitional period to help ensure a future of happier learning.

Against this background, HKME is delighted to organise this event together with EdUHK’s Department of Early Childhood Education, The EdUHK Early Childhood Learning Centre, and EdUHK Library. This event will adopt a creative approach to display traditional customs and etiquette related to ‘first day of school’ with a sharing session on how to prepare young children for a successful and positive transition from home to kindergarten.
