The development of teacher education in Hong Kong has been linked closely with societal needs. lt has evolved gradually through various stages, from tutors in traditional study halls (sishu), the pupil-teacher system in church schools and government schools in the early colonial-rule period, the establishment of full time and part-time evening teacher-training courses by the government, to the establishment of multiple colleges of education. Teacher education in Hong Kong has progressively undergone modernisation, professionalisation and expansion.
