Old Songs New Lyrics Competition

More than 1,000 teachers and students from 35 kindergartens took part in the Old Songs New Lyrics Contest held by The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK, formerly HKIEd) at its Tai Po campus on 21 May.

Organised by the Hong Kong Museum of Education (HKME) at EdUHK, the event was supported by the Department of Early Childhood Education and the Department of Cultural and Creative Arts. Officiating at the contest was Professor Lee Chi-kin, Vice President of EdUHK.

Under the themes of the traditional Confucian values “benevolence” (仁), “politeness”(禮)and “filial piety”(孝), kindergarten teachers were invited to rewrite the lyrics of six nursery rhyme classics, including “Spring is Here” (春天來了), “Dance of Youth”( 青春舞曲), “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”( 搖小船) and “Fengyang Song”(鳳陽花鼓). Students were invited to perform their new renditions at the contest. Renowned music composer and producer Mr Mark Lui and TV show host Mrs Jade Lui served as event ambassadors. Mr Cheng Kwok Kong, the notable lyricist, and Ms Emily Mok Fung-yee, Senior Consultant of the Digital Broadcasting Corporation Hong Kong Limited, served as guest adjudicators of the lyrics and performance competitions, respectively.

The contest was followed by a sharing session hosted by Mr Lui, Mrs Lui and Mr Cheng. The winning lyrics, together with paintings of the same themes, will be published by HKME for sharing with the education sector and beyond.
