In 2006, the Hong Kong Museum of History and the Hong Kong Institute of Education collaborated on a research project named "An Exploratory Survey on Village Schools in Hong Kong" to study the development of rural education in Hong Kong. The "Under the Trees" series of exhibitions are based on the findings of these research materials and are now being displayed on Tai Po Campus.
Campuses of the village schools are often decorated with flowers and vegetation, with shade of beautiful trees. The "Under the Trees" exhibitions fully depict this special characteristic of village schools. The exhibition series is divided into two parts, namely "Under the Trees (I): The History of Hong Kong Village Schools" and "Under the Trees (II): People and Stories from Village Schools", which are being displayed at the Hong Kong Museum of Education and the Mong Man Wai Library respectively on HKIED Tai Po campus.
The former exhibition showcases the development of village schools and rural education, displaying more than 150 artefacts of great historical value; the latter exhibition features people and stories from village schools. "Under The Trees (II)" has also been displayed earlier at the Hong Kong History of Museum from 21st July to 27th September 2010, and has been visited by over 38,000 members of the public. You are welcome to visit the Hong Kong Museum of Education and the Mong Man Wai Library for both exhibitions and learn more about the historical development of village schools in Hong Kong.
